A covenant is simply an agreement between two or more persons.
The most sacred of human covenants is the covenant of marriage, but Scripture records others. In essence, a church covenant is part of what defines the relationship and sets expectations of members in the body of Christ. Every church will have some sort of covenant, be it written or unwritten, verbal or understood, formal or informal. Every relationship has expectations, we find it helpful to specify ours. In summary, you will find our church covenant is a brief overview of the "one-another" commands of Scripture.
As those who profess to follow Jesus, the expectation is that members of Kahului Baptist Church will live in accordance with this profession, by the grace of God, for the glory of God.
The church covenant states:
In our commitment to these Articles of Faith, we make the following covenant: having been led as we believe by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into the covenant with one another as one Body in Christ.
We pledge, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge, holiness and peace; to promote the prosperity and spirituality of this Church; to sustain its worship services, ordinances, doctrines and discipline; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the Church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations
We also undertake to maintain family and personal devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to strive to walk uprightly in the world; to be just in our dealings and faithful in our engagements; to avoid gossiping, backbiting and excessive anger; to seek God's help in abstaining from all the drugs, food, drink, and practices which bring unwarranted harm to the body or jeopardize our own or another's faith; and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the Kingdom of our Savior.
We further commit ourselves to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer; to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense and always ready for reconciliation, mindful of the admonishment of our Savior to secure it without delay.
We, moreover, affirm that when any one of us moves from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church in our new locale where we will continue to carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.
